SPEAKING

Activity 1

Look at the two photos. How are they similar? Choose a) or b).

a) Both photos show people trying to do something difficult.

b) The photos show people on the stage and in the air.

Compare the photos, describe both similarities and differences.

Try to keep talking for about 40 seconds.

TIPS
  1. You should use comparative structures while comparing the photos. Read these following examples:

  • The man looks much younger  than the woman.

  • There are fewer people in the second photo.

  • The woman's clothes are more brightly-coloured than the man's.

  • The man looks more nervous than the woman.

  •  The woman is taking a bigger physical risk.

  • The woman seems to be enjoying herself more than the man.

   2. You can also use linking expressions to express your ideas.

    Examples:

  •  While the first photo shows a man who's about to perform in public, the woman in the other photo is on her own.

  •  The man is inside but the woman is out in the open air.

  •  In the first photo, the man looks quite nervous, whereas  in the other one the woman looks quite relaxed.

  •  That's funny because the woman is taking a risk in while the man is not in danger.

  •  I think the woman has practiced a lot and is an expert but on the other hand the man might be doing this for the first time.

Activity 2

Work in pairs.

Share with your partner an adventurous sport that you have taken or a person you know has taken.

  1. Which adventurous sport is it?

  2. Who has taken that adventurous sport?

  3. How did you/ that person feel about it ?

  4. What was the best part of the sport?
